How many grafts need to be transplanted

  ยท   12 Apr 2024

Hair trans plantation is the only treatment method that can solve the problem of hair loss for a long period of time. Everyone who decides to have a hair transplant has a logical question - how many grafts do I need to transplant to get the desired result?

Hair Loss Stages

The number of grafts a patient needs for hair transplant surgery depends on the individual situation. Between 500 and 6,000 grafts can be transplanted.
A typical hair transplant involves approximately 4,000 grafts. However, it all depends on the size of the area being transplanted.
Anyone who suffers from hair loss and is researching hair transplantation will sooner or later come across the term "grafts". In the case of hair transplantation, it means follicular units. In other words, follicular units that are extracted from the donor area (temporal, occipital part of the head) and transplanted to areas of baldness.

How many hairs are in one graft?
The hair roots, from which hair is formed, are located in the follicles. The hair grows in groups. There can be up to three hair roots in one follicle. This pattern is similar in men and women.

How many grafts per 1 centimeter can be extracted from the donor area?
Usually there are up to 100 grafts per square centimeter of scalp. But for a satisfactory result, 10 to 25 gra fts per square centimeter is sufficient. It depends on how advanced the hair loss has progressed and how big the bald spots are that need to be filled. The quality of the donor area also plays a huge role.

For example, one person may have 50 grafts per square centimeter, while another person may only have 10 grafts per square centimeter. This varies from person to person as it also depends on hair characteristics, hair type and the quality of the hair in the donor area.

With fine and straight hair, it is difficult to remove many grafts without the remaining hair losing its fullness. With other hair types, such as thick or even curly hair, more grafts can be taken as they look fuller on their own. A hair analysis can give more information about your situation.

What does the number of grafts depend on?
The number of grafts to be transplanted to make your hair beautiful and voluminous again depends on the extent of hair loss.
The benchmark for assessing the extent of the balding area is the Norwood scale, which is used to determine the number of grafts that a suitable hair transplant candidate needs.

So, if you are wondering how many grafts you need for hair transplant, we have compiled the table below for you. Determine your stage of baldness and you will know the approximate number of grafts needed for the transplant.

  • Stage I - hair is still full or hairline recession is not very pronounced - no hair transplant is required.
  • Stage II - the hairline is already slowly thinning and/or a thinning hairline appears. Between 500 and 1500 grafts.
  • Stage III - the hairline is already pronounced and shifts to the back of the head. 1,500 to 2,000 grafts.
  • Stage IV - Hair loss is more progressive (e.g. a so-called bald spot is already visible). 2000-2500 grafts
  • Stage V - Hair loss becomes very pronounced on the hair growth line as well as on the back of the head. However, the bald spot and receding hairline are still separated by a narrow band of hair. 2,800 to 3,200 grafts.
  • Stage VI - Hair loss progresses to semi baldness 3500 to 4300 counts.
  • Stage VII - Only a few hairs are now left. They form a ring of hair between the ears. 5000 to 6000 grafts.

What if there is not enough hair on the donor area?
No matter how many grafts you have on your head, it may not be enough to completely cover the baldness area. What to do in such a case? There is a solution.

Hair for transplantation can be taken from the beard, chest, back, arms. This greatly helps the patient to achieve a good result even if there is not enough donor hair on the head.

And it looks good, as the doctor repeats the natural hair planting pattern: a large hair in front and two or three smaller hairs behind it, forming a kind of underbelly, which makes your hair natural and natural.

Only your hair is used for the transplant. The hair of another person cannot be used.

What does the donor area look like after a hair transplant?
The grafts are taken from the donor area at the back of the head. It is located in the area of the hair growth line between the ears. The peculiarity of the hair growing in this area is that it is relatively insensitive to hormones that cause hair loss.

A self-respecting surgeon will not extract too many grafts. This way, there will be enough donor grafts left over for subsequent hair transplant sessions. This can be important as hair loss is gradual.

In the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) method, a narrow strip of skin (skin flap) is taken from the back of the head, from which the grafts are then extracted. The resulting wound is sutured using a special technique so that only a narrow scar remains.

In the FUE method (Follicular Unit Extraction) , the grafts are removed individually using a hollow needle. An experienced doctor will distribute the removal of the individual hairs on the back of the head in such a way that it will not be noticeable later that the hair was removed there.

A further development of the FUE method is the Sapphire DHI hair transplant. Here, the hair is removed using a special implantation pin and directly inserted back in. This method is very popular, especially for receding hairlines.
